Friends of wolwespruit!
Welcome to Friends of Wolwespruit! We are a group of nature-lovers on a mission! Do you care for the environment and always wonder what more you can do to help? Well, you’ve come to the right place.
We care for and clean the Wolwespruit. So far, we’ve achieved this with a great portion of the Wolwespruit, which is now known as the Wolwespruit Mountain Bike and Trail Park nearby January Masilela Drive in Pretoria. But our mission isn’t finished yet!
Our aim is to fence off the entire greenbelt to protect it from illegal rubbish dumping, poaching of wildlife and various forms of pollution.
We want to open the secured greenbelt areas to the public where the community can enjoy hiking, running and cycling on the beautiful trails.
our story.
The park was established in July 2014 with the aim of creating a safe environment for mountain bike riders, runners and hikers to enjoy the outdoors, right in their neighbourhood backyard. The park currently comprises a 90 hectare area, with a 23 km mountain bike trails and 10 kilometre trail run.
Friends of Wolwespruit is a community benefit organisation with the goal of securing the Wolwespruit greenbelt (waterway and ecosystem) based in Pretoria. We aim to prevent vagrants from inhibiting and polluting the areas by fencing off, cleaning and protecting the areas around the spruit. When this is done, the natural environment is rehabilitated.
Are you ready to get involved and be part of the change?
so, what is the problem?
Squatting
Land that isn’t enclosed and protected is an opportunity for vagrants to squat here without any rights or permission. In so doing, they pollute the water and natural surroundings.
illegal dumping
Unscrupulous contractors, criminals and residents of the city illegally dump rubbish, unwanted stolen goods and building rubble along the spruit, causing extensive pollution which is difficult to clean up.
damage to nature
The squatters don’t use the land sustainably – they hunt all the animals, invade protected areas and damage the plant life growing there. They also pollute the spruit, which is very damaging to the environment.
criminal routes
Criminals also use this piece of land for strategic routes. They use the greenbelt to pass through when moving between places, as it is quick, convenient and offers coverage – the perfect hideout.
veld fires
Squatters and vagrants cause accidental and deliberate veld fires, which is destructive to the environment, animals living in the area and endangers the lives of the people living around this area.
our solution.
our solution.
We are a community benefit organisation with the goal of securing the Wolwespruit greenbelt (waterway and ecosystem) based in Pretoria. Friends of Wolwespruit aims to clean and protect by fencing off the areas around the spruit and preventing vagrants from inhibiting and polluting the areas. When this is done, the natural environment is rehabilitated.
Our vision is to create a safe and clean environment for the community to enjoy nature in the suburbs. The protection of the Wolwespruit will also increase the security and the safety of the community due to the elimination of hiding places for vagrants and criminals.
But we can’t do it alone! This project requires many hands, people who can schedule time in their diaries to do something for the greater good and we need lots of Moola to make it happen! In short, we need YOU and whatever you can bring to the table.
but how does it benefit me?
lifestyle
Do you enjoy being active and outdoors? What about a nice iced coffee after your 5km trail run? Or a breakfast with your family in the heart of nature? Yes, all this can be enjoyed when we protect and clean the greenbelts in our city!
safety
Going for a run is so much better when you feel safe, right? Always have a clean, safe and protected area to enjoy your hike, run or cycle. Enjoy the peace of nature in your neighbourhood, without worrying about your safety.
nature
A cleaner and greener environment benefits all! From the air you breathe to the water you drink, it should all be clean. Being part of Friends of Wolwespruit shows that you care about yourself, family and environment.
wildlife
A cleaner greenbelt also benefits the wildlife living in these areas. When we fence off the green belts, the biodiversity and ecosystem is protected. And don’t forget about your furry friend at home – give your dogs a lovely outing!
business
Working from home or in an office nearby? Safer communities provide many opportunities for your business. Not to mention the safe and peaceful places we create, perfect for a productive business meeting.
become part of something bigger.
Friends of Wolwespruit hope its actions will create a safe and clean environment for the community to enjoy nature right in the suburbs of the city. The protection of the Wolwespruit will also increase the security and the safety of the community due to the elimination of hiding places for vagrants and criminals.

join our ploggas
Once a month, caring volunteers from our community come together to clean the Wolwespruit and the greenbelt open spaces. We meet at PLTFRM Wolwespruit and have a coffee. Then the games begin! Each person gets a garbage bag and starts picking up any litter lying around. It’s an adventure-filled day spent building relationships and making memories while we do something for the greater good of our community and environment. Are you joining us next time? Follow us on Facebook to stay updated about upcoming Ploggas!
